Trent Founder Continues To Contribute To Community

Tom Symons, founding president of Trent University, has been selected to serve on the Peterborough-Lakefield Police Services Board. With this appointment Dr. Symons continues to serve and contribute to the community he has called home for more than 45 years. "I'm very fond of this community; it's been very good to me and I hope this is an opportunity to contribute back," Symons told the local media.

Not one to seek the spotlight, Symons' significant contributions reach well beyond the bounds of Peterborough, as a Google search will reveal. Dr. Symons is perhaps the embodiment of the spirit of what Trent University has come to mean for many of us - work hard, be compassionate, and give of self for the betterment of all.

We hope that Trent can recapture that spirit, so elusive in recent years.

Dr. Thomas Symons views his selection to the Peterborough-Lakefield Police Services Board as an opportunity to give back to the community.

Now retired, Dr. Symons is the founding president of Trent University. He still teaches on a voluntary basis at Trent as well as other notable universities such as Oxford and Harvard

"I've lived in Peterborough for 45 years and I'm very fond of this community; it's been very good to me and I hope this is an opportunity to contribute back," says Dr. Symons.

He was sworn in as a member of the board Tuesday.

Board member Mary Smith, also a councillor for Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Township, nominated Dr. Symons for the position after he was selected. Resumes are submitted for the position when there's an opening. This year, former chair Alan Wilson's term was up, leaving an empty seat. Provincial board appointee Tom O'Grady, a former OPP commissioner, is also leaving this year.

Members also voted to have Peter McLean take over the chair's duties for 2006. Mr. McLean is a real estate advisor for McLean, Simon and Associates and is past president of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. McLean says the biggest challenge of 2006 will be developing the police service's new business plan that will cover how the force conducts business for the next three years.
