Trent Security Officer Guilty of Theft Sentenced by Court

Randy Grims, the former Trent University security officer who pleaded guilty to stealing cash from Trent's parking machines, received a suspended sentence, probation for 18 months and 100 hours of community service. Grims was ordered to pay Trent the $2,977 he stole from campus parking machines (see Examiner article).

Grims is the very security officer whom, allegedly, Trent human resources managers consistently, and blindly, defended without investigation when he and another security officer were accused of harassing female employees. Peterborough Examiner - June 29, 2005 - Page B2

A former Trent University security officer who stole $2,977 from campus parking machines must pay the money back and perform 100 hours of community service.

Randy Grims, 38, of Wintergreen Court got a suspended sentence yesterday and was placed on probation for 18 months, a joint submission from counsel accepted by Mr. Justice Ray Taillon.

Grims pleaded guilty to theft partway through a trial last month, admitting he took the money from pay-and-display machines at various parking lots at the university between May 2003 and February 2004.

He committed six thefts after hours, with the highest one-time total being $890.65, Ontario Courts of Justice heard.

Parking officials first became aware of the missing money in February 2004, and Grims was charged the following month.

He lost his job, court heard.
