Reminder: Patterson's commitment to transparency and accountability

Fact or Fiction? You decide.

Here is what Trent University President Bonnie Patterson said to the Board of Governors on January 30, 1998 in accepting the position of President. In light of current financial, legal and accountability issues at Trent, you decide if President Patterson has honoured her own words or not. Has the Trent University Board of Governors carried out their responsibility of overseeing the actions of President?

Professor Patterson felt that increasing Trent's financial viability was one of the most fundamental challenges for the new administration, and indicated that the fundraising campaign, the Foundation and revenue generation initiatives would all be important elements in this effort. She expressed concern for the financial self-sufficiency not only of the institution, but of its graduates as well. On the issues of accountability and institutional autonomy, the President-designate reminded the Board that universities were now increasingly required to respond to legislated "drivers" such as the proposed public sector accountability act, and to measure themselves against best practices. She indicated her intention to focus considerable attention on increasing the transparency of the University's operations within the Peterborough community and maximizing Trent's connection with the social, cultural, economic and environmental advancement of the region. Beyond that, the University would need to work hard at its communications agenda and make its messages meaningful for members of the public.
