Controversy, budget over-runs & legal battles: Give Pres a raise!

Despite a year of controversy, budget over-runs and legal battles Trent gave President Bonnie Patterson a 3.3% salary increase and praised her performance.

Salary disclosures for 2004 show Trent president Bonnie Patterson's base salary increased another $7,350, or 3.3%. In the local area there are only two people paid more than Patterson, as revealed by the public sector disclosures. Those individuals are health care professionals at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC): lead hospitalist Dr. Susan Sudbury at $253,454 and hospitalist Dr. Bill Shannon at $234,846. At $245,087 when combined with her taxable benefits, Bonnie Patterson is the second highest paid in the local area (Dr. Shannon had no taxable benefits). Patterson's salary exceeds that of Paul Darby, the President & CEO of the PRHC, who's salary is $218,000 yet Mr. Darby runs an operation that literally deals with life and death situations and whose budget and building projects exceed those of Trent University.

Last year was a year full of rather public issues, controversies and budget overages. The Gzowski College SuperBuild project was at least $3.2-million over budget (the figure is not audited and a forensic audit might well reveal a larger number). The legal battles with building contractors resulted in $9.2-million in contractor's liens. Issues of accountability and transparency continue to fester, particularly surrounding the DNA cluster project including the absence of a business plan and questionable funding sources. Trent has had to put off hiring new staff to shave $1.75 million from budget because the administration overestimated enrollment. Still, the board gave Bonnie Patterson a raise because, according to board chair Reid Morden, "The board felt she performed extremely well" (Peterborough Examiner, March 11, 2005, page B1). If your organization's president had a record like this would you give her a raise and praise her performance?

And just for interest's sake, here's the salary disclosure for the President of the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) for the salary years 1996 & 1997.

Year President of COU Salary Paid Taxable Benefits Total
