Trent University's Endowment Lands Master Plan

Why a Master Plan for the Endowment Lands?

One of Trent University's most precious assets is the land it holds in stewardship. They help to define the natural setting of the University, act as a teaching and research resource for staff and students, contribute to the high quality of life on campus and provide a potential source of revenue for the University in support of its mission. The Endowment Lands, specifically, provide the opportunity, through their development, to generate income for the University.

The Endowment Lands can afford the University with a significant source of financial benefit which has yet to be realized. While a series of planning guidelines drafted in the early nineties had called for the quick identification and pursuit of a "revenue-generating project", uncertainty as to the highest and best use of these lands has made it difficult for the University to respond to development proposals, or further, to solicit investments.

A Master Plan for the Trent University Endowment Lands allows the University to be proactive in its approach to managing development and maximizing the benefit afforded by its lands.

Scope of the Master Plan

The Master Plan will address the following questions:

  • What are the feasible, viable, appropriate and supportable short and long term uses of the endowment lands?
  • What are the appropriate financial and ownership arrangements to ensure the university maintains benefit over the long term.
  • Where can development occur, when and what use and form of development is appropriate?
  • How should new development interface and integrate with other campus lands and nature areas?

Next Steps

Following today's Open House, the consultant team will integrate your feedback into the Draft Master Plan. This Draft Master Plan will be formally submitted at the beginning of November and following feedback from the University, the final Master Plan will be submitted in early December.
