Combating Global Pandemics
A Public Symposium hosted by the International Consortium on Anti-Virals (ICAV). September 23rd 2005, 9:00 am – 6:30 pm, Gzowski College, Symons Campus, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

The threat of viral pandemics continues to menace our world, as the speed and impact of the 2003 SARS outbreak made frighteningly clear. Experts agree that is not a question of if a pandemic will strike, only when and where it will first emerge. The ensuing devastation will impact every corner of the world.
Canada’s current influenza pandemic preparedness strategy is mainly based on vaccine development and stockpiling the anti-viral drug Tamiflu®. Resistant forms of the virus are bound to emerge under the selective pressure of widespread Tamiflu® use and new vaccine development will require at least 6 months. New anti-virals are therefore desperately needed to avert the potential social and economic disruption that would otherwise accompany an influenza pandemic.
Approximately 130 scientists and government representatives from 15 countries are expected to attend this Symposium which launches a two-day Workshop – Combating Global Viral Pandemics.

ICAV’s Fall Symposium at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario brings together scientists, researchers, medical experts and government representatives from around the world.

ICAV is a made-in-Canada initiative, founded in 2004 as a Canadian response to the SARS crisis. ICAV participants include Pasteur Institute (Paris, Shanghai, Hong Kong); Glycobiology Institute (Oxford University, Oxford); Médecins sans Frontières (Paris); Taiwan Institute of Biochemistry; Scripps Institute for Medical Research (San Diego); and the Glycomics Institute, Griffiths University (Australia) amongst others. This international team has come together to share expertise and resources with the common goal of discovering and developing new therapeutics to target viral diseases.
