Citing Tom Symons' lengthy service to the university, Peterborough, the province and Canada, Mayor Sylvia Sutherland called the Order of Canada recipient "certainly among Canada's most distinguished citizens."
For his part, Mr. Symons wondered what he can do with his new key but joked he would try to find out that evening.
Coun. Paul Rexe, a student of Mr. Symons' during Trent's inaugural year, had nothing but praise for his former teacher and the godfather of his grandson.
"When Trent opened, it provided an opportunity for many young people in the community whose economic circumstances could not afford attending university out of town," he said.
Mr. Symons was 32 when he took on the job as first Trent president. He served in that role from 1961 to 1972. He has also served on a number of committees, commissions and with other institutions, and is a companion of both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario.
