City funds DNA cluster project to the tune of $2 million By Mike Lacey Peterborough This Week - Oct 26, 2004
The City will give the DNA cluster project $2 million over four years. It will in four annual payments of $500,000 commencing in 2005. In exchange, the City will negotiate a possible land swap with the university. While Trent president Bonnie Patterson was somewhat mum on what that will entail, she does note there is land the City is seeking for road improvements, parks and trails, and storm management systems. The provincial and federal governments have already invested more than $10 million in the project. Ms Patterson notes City funding will show the upper levels of government that the community supports the program and pave the way for future government support. She adds cluster projects such as this are the future of economic development. Only councillors Terry Guiel and Garry Herring voted against the funding. With the funding, the project team will now commence construction of four buildings with two of those to be completed by December 2005. Currently, Trent University and the Ministry of Natural Resources are ready to move in immediately. However, the cluster project team is now beginning to seek private businesses to get involved. |
